Tick Tock Goes The Clock

Continuing with our time work, today Year 3 explored telling the time to 5 minutes. First they discussed a range of questions such as:

  • How many hours are there in a day?
  • What do the numbers on a clock mean?
  • How many minutes are there in an hour?
  • How do we know which is the minute hand? Hour hand?

Next the children looked at a range of clocks and explored how to determine if a time is “past” or “to”, before using this knowledge to decide whether to count in 5s clockwise or anti-clockwise around the clock faces in order to read the correct time.

The children then finished the morning by working in small groups to correctly record the correct time related words/phrases beside their corresponding clock numbers i.e. 12 – o’clock, 3 – quarter past, 4 – 20 past, 11 – 5 to etc. before using their completed clocks to tackle a time-telling challenge.
