Reception class celebrates Diwali
We have been learning about the festival of Diwali. It is the Hindu Festival of Lights. We read the story “Dipal’s Diwali” to find out all about the Hindu celebration. The festival honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. The festival is a time for spring cleaning, decorating homes with lots of new lights, wearing new clothes, exchanging gifts, preparing festival meals and watching firework displays.
Hindus also celebrate the legend of Rama and Sita. We sequenced pictures from the story and built bridges in the construction area like Rama and Hanuman did to get across the water to save Sita.
Hindus draw rangoli patterns on the floors of their house. In maths, we created rangoli patterns using 2d shapes and coloured in rangoli shape patterns.
Diva lamps are lit to help Lakshmi find her way into people’s homes. The children made their own diva lamps using paper plates and play dough.
