Year 2 Library Visit

Year 2 visited Blaydon library to celebrate stories and food week. The children listened to a chapter from Matilda and then completed a quiz about foods from around the world. Finally, the children chose books to bring back to school.

Year 2 Plant Party!

Year 2 visited Scotswood Gardens for a plant party. They explored the gardens and searched for different plants. Then, they had a workshop on the different parts of a flowering plant before planting a seed of their own. They also had the chance to search for different creatures and listen to the sounds of different birds. A great day had by all!

World Book Day in Year 2!

Year 2 enjoyed taking part in various World Book Day tasks. They started the morning with a treasure hunt and then created a fact file about the character they were dressed as. They all looked fantastic and had lots of fun!

EYFS and KS1 film night – Arthur Christmas

EYFS , Year 1 and Year 2 had a brilliant time at their film night. They loved their cookies and hot chocolate whilst watching the film. The tuck shop was very popular and children enjoyed using the money they had brought to pay for their treats. They behaved amazingly and we were super proud.

Year 1 and Year 2 Christmas party

Year 1 and 2 had a fantastic time at their Christmas party. There was lots of dancing and some yummy food. Check out our excellent party clothes in the photographs below.

Christmas Reading Buddies!

Year 2 had a special visit from their Year 4 reading buddies on Friday. The children enjoyed reading Christmas stories and relaxing in their comfy pyjamas.

Digital Footprint

Today, Year 2 have been learning about digital footprint. We discussed how a digital footprint is similar to a footprint made in cement – it can last for a very long time.

The children then looked at different ways to create a positive digital footprint and how to keep safe online. Finally, the children created a poster to help share what they have learnt with others.

Science Mash Up KS1

Year 1 and 2 had a great morning on Monday during our spooky science morning. They enjoyed four activities to look at different strands of working scientifically. They carried out research into different mini beasts, used their senses to figure out a range of strange smells and feelings, classified a range of mini beasts and identified a range of body parts with our spooky skeleton.

Chopwell Woods

Year 2 visited Chopwell Woods as part of their Science and DT topic. The children explored the different microhabitats they could find and then compared two different microhabitats to find out which one had the most minibeasts. They also found some new minibeasts that the class researched once we got back to school. The children collected natural resources to use in their minibeast habitat boxes as part of DT.

Year 2 Jeans for Genes day

As part of Jeans for Genes day, Year 2 drew their eye, coloured it in and stuck it onto our class jean template. The children then compared the different colours within our class, finding out the most popular and least popular colour. Year 2 then went to visit Nursery and Reception and collected data about their eye colours. Once back in the classroom they compared their findings in Nursery and Reception to the Year 2 data.

Year 2 Mental Health Day

For World Mental Health day Year 2 children came into school wearing bright clothing. They had a fantastic afternoon spent outdoors sketching and painting with water colours. Check out some of our amazing art!

Year 2 found lots of different words around their classroom. The children had to read the words and decide if they were action verbs or being verbs.

KS1 Athletics Festival

Some of our KS1 children were chosen to take part in an athletics festival at Gateshead Stadium. The children enjoyed doing different activities and learning new PE skills. Well done KS1 you were great!

Who was Florence Nightingale?

In History, the children have been learning about Florence Nightingale. To start the topic the children found facts around the classroom and had to explain to the rest of the class who she was and what she did to help the soldiers during the war.

Eco-Team Volunteering

This afternoon, the eco-team visited the new site for the Gateshead West Uniform Scheme. They helped organise and sort bags of clothes and shoes into the correct sizes and grouped them into schools so that when people visit the shop they’ll be able to pick what they need with ease.

We will be updating parents when the scheme confirm their regular dates so families can visit to buy uniforms.

World Book Day in Year 2!

As part of our World Book Day celebrations, we have been book detectives! We had lots of different pictures of characters’ feet. First, we had to match up the pictures of the feet to the clues and then we had to guess which story book character they belonged to! Two teams managed to guess all of the characters correctly!

In history, we have been learning all about the Great Fire of London. We made a list of the facts we have learned about the fire and then went on a hunt around our classroom to find pieces of evidence to prove that our facts were correct about the fire. We discovered some pieces of evidence could prove more than one fact!

Classifying in Science

During our world habitats topic in science, we have been learning about animals from all over the world and which habitats they live in. In this lesson, we sorted animals into a venn diagrams, depending on whether they live in the Artic or the Antarctic.

Adding by making ten

During maths last week, the children in Year 2 were using tens frames to help them to make ten first when they were adding two one digit numbers together. They then moved onto applying this skill mentally to help them solve single digit addition calculations efficiently.

Spooktacular Science Week in KS1

Today KS1 worked in mixed groups to carry out a range of spooky science tasks. On the research table, children explored bats and created fact posters and food chains. On the pattern seeking table, children had to put their hands in a revolting mixture and see what spooky items they picked out. They then had to look for patterns in the objects they had retrieved.

Florence Nightingale

In our history lessons this half term, we have been learning all about Florence Nightingale. We have ordered the key events in Florence’s life on a time line and talked about how long ago Florence was alive. We have also completed a fact hunt to find out lots of information about Florence’s early life. We have then used a range of picture sources to complete an inquiry to find out what hospitals were like in Scutari before Florence Nightingale arrived and after she had put lots of changes in place. We even went on a school trip to Beamish!

Year 2 visit Beamish to learn about Florence Nightingale

Year 2 had a great time visiting Beamish last Friday. They completed a Florence Nightingale workshop and learned all about how important hand washing was, how to bandage wounds and how to wash dirty bandages and bed clothes. They also had a ride on the 1820s steam train and talked about what life would have been like in the 1820s. A great time was had by all!
