Year 1 trip to Gibside

Year 1 enjoyed their visit to Gibside linked to their science unit plants. They completed a plant hunt in the walled garden and made observational drawings of trees and plants.
We finished the day off having fun in the park.

Sharing by grouping

In maths Year One have been sharing amounts by grouping into 2s, 5s or 10s. At the end of the lesson the children worked together to investigate whether all numbers can be grouped in 2s, 5s and 10s.

Year 1 Multi skills Festival

Year 1 had a fantastic afternoon in the sunshine at Thorp Academy. They participated in 16 different multi skill activities ran by the year 7 sport leaders including running, jumping, throwing, catching and skipping.

Numbers up to 50

In maths this week year 1 have been working systematically with numbers beyond 20 up to 50. The children have been partitioning numbers into tens and ones and identifying numbers by grouping numbers into tens and ones.

World book day in Year 1

Year 1 had lots of fun completing lots of world book day activities across the day. They participated in a treasure hunt, guessed the book by the emojis, crated book marks and character hunts. They all looked fantastic dressed up as their favourite book characters from their favourite stories.

Mars day in Year 1

To celebrate Mars day, year 1 worked together to make a moon lander. Each group were given the exact same resources and they had to follow instructions to make their moon lander. Once completed, they launched them to see if the egg-naut survived.

Doubles

This week, Year 1 have been working on doubles and near doubles. They have enjoyed lots of practical activities to show their understanding. We have been very impressed.

Goldilocks and Just One Bear

This week, Year 1 have been reading a different version of the traditional Goldilocks story. They have learnt the words and actions to the story and performed it amazingly. They have then been choosing some brilliant verbs and adjectives to use in their sentences. Next week they will be using them to write their own versions of the story.

Year 1 Character Descriptions

This morning, Year 1 are planning their dragon character descriptions. They have selected some brilliant vocabulary including adjectives and verbs that would be suitable to describe their dragons such as swoop, soar, creep, gentle, terrifying and scaly.

Build a bedroom

Year 1 are completing their final designs in DT this morning. After lots of planning and practice, they are working in pairs to build their bedroom. They have completed wallpaper, built a bed and have sewed a pillow for their bed.

A Visit from a Vet

This morning, Year 1 have had a very special visitor to end our animals topic. Miss Moss came into visit us so we could ask her lots of questions about the animals she looks after. She also brought us some stethoscopes to hear our own heartbeats, like she does to the animals. We also have some leaflets all about foods that are dangerous to our pets at this time of year. Lots of us would love to be vets so Miss Moss explained how she became a vet.

Some of the questions we asked included:

What is the best way to look after a puppy?
What medicines do animals need?
What happens if an animal loses a tooth?
What happens if an animal breaks a bone?

EYFS and KS1 film night – Arthur Christmas

EYFS , Year 1 and Year 2 had a brilliant time at their film night. They loved their cookies and hot chocolate whilst watching the film. The tuck shop was very popular and children enjoyed using the money they had brought to pay for their treats. They behaved amazingly and we were super proud.

Year 1 and Year 2 Christmas party

Homes from the Past – Year 1 visit Beamish

This week, Year 1 visited Beamish as part of their history topic looking at homes and toys from the past. They took part in a workshop where they got to play with a range of toys from the 1950s. They had to work out what they were made from and how they worked. They also discussed who would have played with the toys because in the 1950s there were toys for boys and toys for girls. After the workshop we then visited houses from the 1950s and 1900s where we spotted things that were the same and things that were different from our own homes. It was great to see for ourselves what we have been learning about in the classroom. We of course loved the tram!

Balancing in Year 1

Guess the animal

In today’s science lesson, Year 1 have used their knowledge of the animal groups to play a game of guess the animal. They had some wonderful questions including:

Is it a mammal?
Can it fly?
Does it live underwater?
Does it have feathers?
Does it live somewhere cold?

Grouping animals

As part of our new science topic, Year 1 grouped animals in lots of different ways. They looked for similarities and differences. Some of the groups they used were animals that could swim, animals that could fly and animals that were small.

Over the next few weeks, we will be learning about reptiles, mammals, birds, fish and amphibians.

Year 1 PE with NUFC

Year 1 have really enjoyed their PE sessions with the NUFC coach this half term. They have worked on a range of skills such as throwing, catching, changing speed and changing direction. They have had lots of fun!

Learning about our senses in Year 1

This half term in Year 1, we are learning about our 5 senses. Over the last few weeks, we have looked at our sense of taste and sense of touch. We loved tasting lots of different foods including lemons, chocolate and olives. We had children trying foods for the very first time. When looking at our sense of touch, we compared a range of different objects and talked about what felt smooth, rough, soft and hard.

Features of Blaydon

As part of our geography topic, Year 1 walked around Blaydon this week to find human and physical features. They spotted lots of human features such as houses, school, shops and churches. They also spotted the physical feature of the River Tyne.

The children were brilliant on our walk and were really confident at identifying if the feature was human or physical and they were super sensible and great representatives of Blaydon West.

Year 1 have settled back into school really well and are enjoying the learning in the areas. We are building our own houses in the construction area and painting our favourite book characters in the creative area.

Year 1 trip to Whitley Bay

As part of their history topic, year one have been learning about seaside holidays in the past. Today we visited Whitley Bay to see some of the seaside traditions we have been learning about including fish and chip shops, ice cream shops, postcards and sticks of rock. We then had a wonderful afternoon of fun on the beach. The children had an amazing time!

How to make a healthy sandwich

Over the last two weeks, we have been planning our ‘Perfect Picnic’. We have planned and then made our own lunchbox and then our sandwich, snack and drink. This afternoon we then visited the ks2 yard to enjoy our delicious picnic. We loved sitting on the beanbags with our friends.

In our English lessons, we have been planning our own instructions to help others make a healthy sandwich.

Year 1 Yoga

Year 1 loved their yoga session this week. They completed a range of different poses and put them into a sequence to music. They enjoyed the mindfulness part of the session where they had to lie down and try and be still and empty their minds. Well done, Year. 1!

Team Building

This half term in PE Year 1 have been working on their team work skills. They have had to complete a number of challenges over the lessons in small groups or as a whole class. They have compared the skills you need to be a good friend and the skills you need to be a good team mate.

Last week, they used the parachute and had to work as a team to create different types of waves and create the biggest mushroom they could. It was so tall even the adults could stand up!

Identifying plants at Gibside

Today, Year 1 have had a brilliant day at Gibside identifying plants and trees. They had a plant hunt where they had to find lots of different plants and trees in the walled forest gardens. They then drew and labelled some of the plants they had seen with some brilliant scientific vocabulary. They then loved playing on the park!

Fiction or non-fiction?

This week, Year One have been looking at fiction and non-fiction books. They sorted them into the right groups and we discussed the features of each to help us identify them. We looked at the photographs and labels, the titles and the facts.

Plants in Year 1

This half term, Year 1 are learning all about plants in our science lessons. We have set up a garden centre in our classroom and this week we have all planted a sunflower seed. We learnt all about what a plant needs to grow and we are very excited to see how tall our sunflowers grow!

Half term, Year 1 have been learning about the art work of Peter Thorpe. They have experimented with different lines and colours and today they created their final pieces. They have loved this topic and the art they have produced has been amazing!

Northumberland Zoo

Year 1 have visited Northumberland Zoo today as part of their science topic of animals including humans. We have been learning about mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians and fish. Today was amazing getting to see all of the different animals are learning about.

World Book Day in Year 1

Year 1 have had a wonderful time celebrating world book day. We have all shared the character and book for our fancy dress with our friends and then taken part in a range of activities including a book scavenger hunt, ‘Who’s slippers are these?’ and creating our own book marks.

Safer Internet Day in Year 1

To mark Safer Internet Day, Year 1 listened to a story called Hanni and the Magic Window. We talked about all the amazing things we can do on the internet but also who we could talk to if things we saw on the internet made us worried or sad.

Character descriptions

Year 1 have been working extremely hard on their character descriptions this half term. They have some wonderful adjectives to describe their dragons and have been using and to join sentences and words. They designed their own dragons and planned the vocabulary they would use in their final piece.

The Human Body

This half term we are going to be learning all about the human body in Year 1. This week we started by labelling lots of different parts of the body. We had lots of fun using a friend to create an outline before labelling it with all of the vocabulary we had discussed.

The children in year 1 have been answering the enquiry question: who is Pudsey Bear and why is friendship important?

They coloured their own Pudsey and made a Pudsey mask. Then they discussed why friendship was important to them and how it makes them feel to have their friends in school.

Preston Park Museum

Today, Year 1 visited Preston Park museum to learn about toys in the past. They had lots of fun trying to work out what a lot of the old toys did. They then had a go at making their own toy. Over the next few lessons we will compare some of our favourite toys with ones we used today. We also got to explore some old shops including a blacksmiths, a sweet shop and a drapers. The children behaved impeccably and were a credit to school. Well done, Year 1.

Year 1 visit St Cuthbert’s

This week, year 1 visited St Cuthbert’s church to see some of the features of the church that they have been learning about in their RE lessons.

They carried out a scavenger hunt activity where they were looking for lots of the different features including the font, the different representations of the cross and the altar.

Fairness March for Black History Month

As part of Black History Month, Year 1 learnt about the story of Rosa Parks and how she fought for fairness and equality for black people. We came up with our own slogans and created posters to use on our fairness march around the yard. We then came up with a chant to shout around the yard.

Year 1 have drawn their own story map for their own version of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. They have worked so hard and can retell their story using the maps. It has been brilliant hearing them all!

This half term in year 1, we are focusing on harvest through printing in our art lessons. We linked this to our class story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and used some of the fruits from the story to create our own prints.

This week in year 1, we are using a story map and actions to help us learn the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The children have worked really hard and learnt the story in two lessons! We will then be using this to help us with some writing.
